Art and the Video Game
The meaning of Art has been considered as the product or process of deliberately arranging items in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect.
It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics, and even disciplines such as history and psychology analyze its relationship with humans and generations.
Art has been defined as a vehicle for the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, a means for exploring and appreciating formal elements for their own sake, and as a representation. More recently, thinkers influenced by Martin Heidegger have interpreted art as the means by which a community develops for itself a medium for self-expression and interpretation.
Up till the 1990's a new form of art known as interactive art has soon become popular even though there has been examples of this kind of art since the 1930's. This new artform allows the participant to provide input to determine the outcome of the activity in which he/she is particapting in.
When films were introduced in the 1920's no one could never believe films could ever become an art. Just as video games have started to become more popluar the same trend will continue. Although video games are usually considered works of entertainment, I believe that video games have and will be understood as a new growing artform of the 21st century. Within this website I will break down the elements of particular video games which have attributed to the aesthetics of what has been understood as an artform. I will prove that a video game can be an interactive artform no different than the mediums of music, film, or literature.
